Amalfi Coast - A Different Perspective

In July 2022 I had the pleasure of visiting the Amalfi Coast for a wedding in Ravello. During the short but incredible five days I spent there, I had the opportunity to explore the beautiful and historic towns, walk the feet melting black sand beaches and capture some images of the pristine landscape.

When Googling the Amalfi Coast you are mostly shown a similar selection of beautiful yet repetitive perspectives and although many of which I also captured, I also wanted to get photos that aren’t as commonly shot.

Below are just some of my favourite images and stories from my time visiting Amalfi, Atrani and Ravello.

The view inland from Villa Eva, Ravello.

The word ‘Coast’ is always used when talking about Amalfi, yet I can’t help but believe that some of the most amazing scenery was actually in the opposite direction.

The villas, churches and other various structures simply stuck to the side of a mountain, resulted in some of the most breathtakingly beautiful views available anywhere in the world. Yes, its all well and nice sitting on one of the balconies of said villas looking out over the pristine turquoise sea, but sometimes looking the other way can give you a very different but equally fantastic view and one I don’t think is shared enough as it should be.

A curious and friendly local.

I was massively taken back by the friendliness, generosity and welcoming locals we met throughout our week.

From bar staff, shopkeepers and waiting staff, everyone we met were nothing but welcoming, kind and helpful. From sharing jokes and laughter to entertaining my poor Italian and attempts of sign language to combat the language barrier, everyone did all they could to make us feel welcome.

But aside from the people, some other locals happened to have this same welcoming and friendly nature. From the family of cats that would greet us on our walk back home to the dog that joined us for pizza, it was one of the most welcoming places I’ve visited yet.

A local family’s alternative transport.

When we go on holiday it is easy to get caught up in a new and wonderful location forgetting that to a lot of the people we see and meet, it is simply their home.

They go about life as usual. The views, which to us are like being on a different planet, are simply the norm these locals see on a daily basis.

This is the same when it comes to how people live, what they eat, how they have fun and how they get about.

Whilst walking from Atrani to Amalfi, we saw this incredible family hop on their boat and take off on what for us, would be the boat trip of a lifetime but to them, could have simply been a trip to a food store.

The incredible architecture of Atrani

Wherever we go, be that a different part of our own country or a different part of the world, things can look very different to what we’re used to.

Atrani was no exception.

Due to the mountainous terrain and historic buildings, homes were built in a very different fashion from what we’re used to in England. Intricate staircases and tunnels through the town created an otherworldly experience that’s difficult to describe let alone capture through images.

You really need to see it for yourself to understand the feeling of walking down massively steep staircases enclosed in tunnels built of people’s homes to eventually reach the town square of Atrani. Again, small and enclosed yet intimate and beautiful with locals drinking wine after work, the bar dog running around greeting all the familiar faces and the smell of fresh pizza baking all shadowed by the vast mountains overhead.

An incredible wedding meal at Villa Eva, Ravello

Things stand out to us because they look incredible, different or familiar.

However, sometimes having the familiar somewhere different creates something that looks incredible.

Having a small, wedding meal with family at Villa Eva is a perfect example. Our two families who we know and have seen before but now in a completely different setting created an incredible experience. For that, we owe it all to the amazing staff of Villa Eva, the incredible wedding planner Mario Capuano and to the amazing Italian locals of Amalfi, Atrani and Ravello.
